International Roaming lets you use your mobile for calls, text and data while you're travelling overseas, using your usual phone number. Check out our Roam Sweet Roam page for more info on availability, rates and charges.
Before you go roaming
International Roaming is a form of excluded usage – meaning costs for calls, texts and data used while roaming aren’t covered by your plan
You are responsible for all charges incurred while overseas
We highly recommend monitoring your usage while overseas via the My Account App. Make sure you update your app to the latest version; on iOS App version 3.4 or Android App version 3.0.2
Roaming Data Packs are highly recommended to stay in control of your data charges. Don’t forget to turn on cellular data / data roaming in your phone settings
We will send you SMS alerts for every estimated $100 spent on data usage. If you purchase a Roaming Data Pack you will receive alerts as you use 50%, 85% and 100% of your allowance. Sometimes alerts can take a bit longer due to delays in estimating how much you've spent.
Voicemail while roaming
Voicemail is not free while roaming. If unconditional diversions are set, the call stays in Australia and goes directly to Voicemail. This means you are only charged the standard Voicemail diversion cost. Conditional call diversions to Voicemail (such as no answer or busy) will incur charges as they still route through the overseas network.
How to make calls and SMS overseas
An international call while overseas
Dial '+' or the international access code '00'
Enter the country code for the country you are calling
Enter the number including the area code (if the number begins with a 0 then remove it).
An international SMS while overseas
Enter the country code for the country you are sending the SMS to
Enter the number minus the 0 at the front
A national call while overseas
Enter area code
Enter the local number
Listen to voicemail
Just call +61411000212
Calling a number that is roaming
Callers from Australia just dial the mobile number as if the roaming number is in Australia.
Callers from overseas still need to call the number as if it's still in Australia - even if it's in the same country. Overseas callers must use the country code for Australia when dialling an Australian mobile number.
Help, something's not working, what do I do?
Sometimes roaming doesn’t work straight away so here are a few things to try if you’re having trouble:
Confirm roaming is switched on either in My Account or through the App.
If the carrier you’re connected to has no service, try a manual network selection and choose a different network. Check out our device guides (under Calls and Contacts) for instructions for your device.
For data roaming issues confirm Cellular Data / Data Roaming is switched on in your phone.
Settings > Mobile (or Cellular / Cellular Data) > Data Roaming > On/Off
Settings > Find mobile networks > More Networks > Data Roaming > on/off
Start > flick left to the App list > Settings > Mobile network > Roam/Don't Roam
What do I do when I get back?
Not a thing. International Roaming is now active on your service and will be available to use the next time you travel.
