International Roaming lets you use your mobile for calls, text and data while you're travelling overseas, using your usual phone number. Check out our Roam Sweet Roam page for more info on availability, rates and charges.

Before you go roaming

  • International Roaming is a form of excluded usage – meaning costs for calls, texts and data used while roaming aren’t covered by your plan
  • You are responsible for all charges incurred while overseas
  • Roaming is available in selected countries
  • Check that your phone is compatible with overseas networks. Some countries use different mobile technology from what we use in Australia
  • International Roaming is not available for Mobile Broadband and Prepaid Mobile services.

Roaming costs and charges

While roaming, you will be charged for;

  • Receiving calls and making calls, data usage, sending MMS and SMS. Usage notifications from Virgin Mobile are free
  • Sending and receiving MMS will incur data charges
  • Receiving and retrieving Voicemail messages
  • Click here to check the rates for the country you’re visiting
  • Roaming charges can take up to 3 months to appear on your bill as Virgin Mobile have to wait for the overseas carrier to pass on your usage information
  • All SMS will be displayed on bills as our message centre number: 61411990010 or 61411990001, and
Voicemail deposits/retrievals will be displayed as: 61411000212
  • Roaming charges aren’t billed in real time, which means you can’t rely on your Credit Limit kicking in and suspending your account to prevent extra usage

Switching roaming on or off

International Roaming can be turned on or off in My Account, or via the My Account App.

My Account

  1. Log in to My Account
  2. Click on the Services tab
  3. Click on International Roaming
  4. Click the toggle to the On or Off position

My Account App

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap International Roaming
  3. Swipe the toggle to the On or Off position

What to expect while roaming

  • We highly recommend monitoring your usage while overseas via the My Account App. Make sure you update your app to the latest version; on iOS App version 3.4 or Android App version 3.0.2
  • Roaming Data Packs are highly recommended to stay in control of your data charges. Don’t forget to turn on cellular data / data roaming in your phone settings
  • We will send you SMS alerts for every estimated $100 spent on data usage. If you purchase a Roaming Data Pack you will receive alerts as you use 50%, 85% and 100% of your allowance. Sometimes alerts can take a bit longer due to delays in estimating how much you've spent.

Voicemail while roaming

Voicemail is not free while roaming. If unconditional diversions are set, the call stays in Australia and goes directly to Voicemail. This means you are only charged the standard Voicemail diversion cost. Conditional call diversions to Voicemail (such as no answer or busy) will incur charges as they still route through the overseas network.

How to make calls and SMS overseas

  3. Enter the number including the area code (if the number begins with a 0 then remove it).

An international SMS while overseas

Calling a number that is roaming

Callers from Australia just dial the mobile number as if the roaming number is in Australia.

Callers from overseas still need to call the number as if it's still in Australia - even if it's in the same country.
Overseas callers must use the country code for Australia when dialling an Australian mobile number.

Help, something's not working, what do I do?

Sometimes roaming doesn’t work straight away so here are a few things to try if you’re having trouble:

  1. Confirm roaming is switched on either in My Account or through the App.
  2. If the carrier you’re connected to has no service, try a manual network selection and choose a different network. Check out our device guides (under Calls and Contacts) for instructions for your device.
  3. For data roaming issues confirm Cellular Data / Data Roaming is switched on in your phone.

Settings > Mobile (or Cellular / Cellular Data) > Data Roaming > On/Off

Settings > Find mobile networks > More Networks > Data Roaming > on/off

Start > flick left to the App list > Settings > Mobile network > Roam/Don't Roam

What do I do when I get back?

Not a thing. International Roaming is now active on your service and will be available to use the next time you travel.
